Launched in the early 1970s, the body reached the height of popularity in the Eighties as an alternative to matching bras and briefs. As an item of lingerie the body is extremely versatile: made from lace and tulle and smooth, cover-up fabrics, it sports a variety of cuts - including the G-string - and cup types, ranging from traditional to balconette, triangle, and so on.

In the beachwear sector the body is a close relative of the one piece swimming costume, although it is usually cut lower at the back.

In jersey, silk and other soft, hugging fabrics, bodies can also be worn as an alternative item of outerwear under a jacket. In this case the styling can be sporty, clean-cut or elegant.
